After a decade of searching for his mother and father, Evan Striker has finally found them. Reunited with his father, Joseph, and his fabled sorceress mother, Calesso, his family is finally whole. But not safe.

Regeval has found their hiding place, but instead of alerting King Ulitch and ending the hunt once and for all, he offers them a deal they cannot refuse: Heal Korifall and he will spare Perrefinee.

Potions are no good and what was supposed to be a simple spell turns into a magical schism, scattering them across the kingdom. Evan becomes lost in a forest with Korifall, while Regeval is stuck with Joseph and Erin in a town crawling with members of the Broom Strands. Calesso and Perrefinee don't fare any better, finding themselves in a village whose people still remember both of them and they aren't afraid to burn witches at the stake.
